Chaplain John served over 30 years in law enforcement retiring in October 1997. His career included 22 years as a U.S. Postal Inspector (Federal Agent), as well as seven years with the Albuquerque Police Department and one year with LAPD before becoming a Postal Inspector. He has served in a variety of lay positions in his 50 years as a Christian.
God led John into police chaplaincy in 1994 after attending a police memorial service in Washington County. It was clear God wanted to use his law enforcement experience to touch the lives of others that he had so much in common with. From 1996 to 2002 John served as a chaplain with the Portland Police Bureau. His home church at that time, Greater Portland Bible Church, recognized John's call to chaplaincy, and the elders ordained him as a police chaplain in January 1997. In 2001, John received his Senior Chaplains Certification from the International Conference of Police Chaplains (ICPC). From 2003 until 2005 Carol and John were chaplains for the Hillsboro Police Department.
Carol served for 30 years as an early childhood educator. Carol received her senior certification level from ICPC in law enforcement chaplaincy from ICPC in 2006. Greater Portland Bible Church has also endorsed her as a police chaplain. She has survived marriage to the law enforcement and chaplain career for over 37 years! She knows the challenges of being married to an officer, Federal Agent and police chaplain.
After moving to Tillamook County John and Carol became members of Tillamook First Christian Church. The elders have endorsed them both as law enforcement chaplains serving Tillamook County.
John and Carol understand the importance of the family unit and the need for compassion after the loss of a loved one. They specialize in providing care for families in time of trauma. Because of their unique qualities and a lifetime of service in law enforcement they are now able to minister to law enforcement personnel and their families.
Both Carol and John are certified in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) by the International Critical Incident Foundation. They also serve as childcare provider volunteers with American Red Cross teams, responding to air and natural disasters. They have responded to earthquakes, air disasters and hurricanes, as well as the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City.
For several years John and Carol have volunteered as facilitators at The Dougy Center for Grieving Children and Families in Southeast Portland. In 2006 they began working at the new center in Hillsboro, Oregon.
They have two married grown children. Their son is a career U. S. Marine and he and his wife and two children live at the Marine Corps Base in 29 Palms, California. Carol and John's daughter lives in Washington County with her husband and where she manages a business.
